Terrible Herbst Motorsports

Our journey began with the indomitable Jerry Herbst, whose mere presence in the gas station industry sent shockwaves through his competitors. Every time he unveiled a new station, the whispers would echo, "Here comes that Terrible Herbst," giving rise to the nickname that has become an integral part of our chain's identity. Another tale traces the name back to a defining moment in the late 1940s when Jerry was venturing to the western United States. While applying for a business license in Cheyenne, Wyoming, a city council member, who happened to own a rival gas station, muttered, "If we let that terrible Herbst in, we'll all go under!" Regardless of its origin, the name stuck, and it has since become synonymous with our brand.

But our story doesn't end at gas stations.

The Truggy

The Herbst Truggy represented the embodiment of the "Unlimited" class, a concept that dared to push the boundaries and left even the finest manufacturers and engineers scratching their heads in disbelief. In the world of off-road racing, where true limitations are scarce, the Truggy stood tall, defying convention and showcasing the sheer power of unlimited possibilities. This fact alone was cause for celebration, for it was a reminder that the world of off-road racing remained untamed and free from the shackles of restriction.

Originally built for Jerry Herbst to race Class 1, the Mike Smith designed Truggy was designed to be simpler and stronger than the current class 1 cars by eliminating the buggy independent arm in favor of the tougher solid rear axle of a Trophy Truck. The Truggy was one of those offroad cars that helped "Change Everything" and helped pave the way to where we are today.
